Important Class Updates

Hello everyone!

I hope everyone has been enjoying the beautiful days we have been having.  Hopefully the temperature will remain mild and comfortable.

Progress reports will go home April 27, 2012; please review them and return the bottom portion of the progress report signed on Monday.

A big thank you for all of the help and support for our bake sale, the girls’ team made a grand total of $477.00. I am very proud of the effort put forth by both teams but especially the enthusiasm of the girls. Because of the amount raised from the bake sale, the price of the field trip has dropped from $30.00 to $16.00. If your child paid the full amount, she received a refund of $14.00 today. Those students that paid the $14.00 for the cost of the transportation will only need to pay an additional $2.00 to cover the entire price.

If you are interested in chaperoning for the field trip the cost for adults is $38.00. Based upon APS mandates parents must provide their own transportation.

I am asking that the girls do not bring electronic devices on the trip unless it is a small camera. If a student has a parent acting as a chaperone then I will leave that decision up to that family. As a means of entertainment movies will be shown as we travel to and from our destination.

This is going to be a pretty long day so I highly suggest that everyone eats a good breakfast because we will not have lunch until early afternoon. I also encourage each student to bring a snack or two for mid-morning and the return trip home.

Hopefully we will have favorable weather for our trip but it would be a good idea for each girl to have a light weight jacket in case of any inclement weather.

With the end of the year quickly approaching I thought it would be a great idea to have an end of the year party. On May 22^nd I would like to have a cookout/picnic on the front steps on the MPR. The girls would enjoy eating, playing, listening to music, signing year books, and saying farewell to their friends until the fall. If any parent(s) would be interested in helping to coordinate this event please send me an email.

A letter explaining our final IB Unit went home on Wednesday, April 25, 2012. The final project will consist of growing a plant from either a potato or carrot. Everyone will need to bring in either a potato or a carrot. If they choose to grow a potato plant they will need the following items: potato, toothpicks, and a plastic bowl. If the carrot project is chosen they will need to have:  carrot and a shallow dish. These items should be sent to school on this coming Monday. The girls will document the growth of their plant from April 30^th to May 11^th in the form of a daily diary. They will submit their results as their final project.

Fourth Grade Field Trip to Ruby Falls in Chattanooga TN

Dear Parents:

As you know we are planning an end-of the year out of state field trip.  We are going to Ruby Falls and Rock City in Chattanooga on the 21^st of May.  Mrs. Johnson gathered the information and came up with a list of activities that the tour company provides.  We are looking to do a three way group tour—Ruby Falls, Rock City, and Incline Railway. The cost of the tour is $16 for children and $38 for adults. The cost of transportation through Harmon Brothers Charter Service will be an extra $14 (PTA field trip funds has assisted with the reduction of the transportation cost from $22 to $14.)

·         $14 will be due April 25^th

·         Final Payment of $16 will be due on the 15^th of May.

In order to assist with the cost of the field trip we would like to have a bake sale on April 24^th and 25^th. We are looking to sell during our lunch time as well as after school. Each class will be expected to bring in a baked good—sweet and/or savory.  If any of you would like to assist with organizing the set up of the tables and to monitor the process, it would be greatly appreciated.  The students would be responsible for the money and setting the cost for the goods.  To add a little more to the excitement, the boys and girls will be competing to see who can raise the most money!  Their sales will depend on their creativity and business savvy.  Their location, marketing, and personality will be a great factor in this competition J.

If you have any other resources (at no cost to the child) to make this trip even more exciting—goody bags, special water bottles, snacks, t-shirts, etc.—please let your child’s teacher know.

CRCT - Important Update!

Hello Wesley Family,

Beginning next Tuesday, April 17^th students will begin taking the CRCT assessment.  This assessment will determine how well students mastered the Georgia Educational Standards. Each day they shall be tested in a different subject area and each test will last approximately two hours. During the testing period visitors will not be allowed in the building. The testing period will take place from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon everyday.

The CRCT Test Schedule:

Tuesday, April 17^th           Reading

Wednesday, April 18^th    Language Arts/English

Thursday, April 19^th         Math

Friday, April 20^th                Science

Monday 23^rd                      Social Studies

April 24^th-27^th                     Make-Ups

Snacks will be provided by the school this year in order to make certain every student receives a healthy and nutritional snack. If your child requires a special diet then they are welcomed to bring something from home.  During each break the students will be able to drink water while having their snacks.  If possible, please donate a water pack for the class. We will need water for each of the testing days.  Any remaining bottles of water will be used during field day.

It is very important for the students to have a positive testing experience; it is essential for them to go to bed early each evening and eat a substantial breakfast each morning.

Please have your child present and on time each day. Mr. Stephens has promised to take those students that are not absent or tardy during the CRCT bowling for the day.  Last year we had a great time and the students really enjoyed themselves.  Unfortunately a few of my students had to remain at the school because they did not meet the guidelines to participate. Let’s make sure the Superstars have 100% participation.

Please be sure to have your child continue practicing and reviewing for the CRCT.  They should have the following tools to assist them with the studying process: Coach Books (for each subject), flash cards, composition notebooks, practice packets, and Study Island.  If your child has achieved blue ribbons in all of the sections in Study Island they can review the lessons or re-do the practice test again.  They are able to access math, science, language arts/reading, and social studies. If your child has a specific area of concern, encourage them to review and practice those skills.

I know “My Girls” will do an awesome job next week. I am very proud of each and every one of them and I know they will strive to do their best.
